5 tools for multi-passionate entrepreneurs

I’m a little embarrassed to admit this but I’ve lost count of all the businesses I’ve had over the years. What began as a wedding invitation shop turned into a ten-year career as a wedding photographer (I still am one… but Covid.) This led to multiple side gigs, from family photography to full-service elopement photography to a photo booth company. Then there was the food blog and the summer I studied sustainable urban agriculture...

5 tools for multi-passionate entrepreneurs

I’ve done it all and the truth is, now I have an incredible skill set under my belt to assist me as I guide other entrepreneurs. Some of my endeavors turned out to be surprisingly successful while others completely flopped. If you’re anything like me and have tried to start more than one business or creative pursuit, then you might be a multi-passionate entrepreneur. In this post, I’ll help you find out if you are a multi-passionate entrepreneur and provide you with five tools to help you evaluate and implement your ideas.

YOU MIGHT BE A MULTI-PASSIONATE CREATIVE

Do you cringe every time you hear the phrase “niching down”? Do your friends and family often ask, “so what exactly are you doing these days?”

I’m here to tell you that you’re not alone and, in fact, there is space for you to thrive by pursuing multiple ideas and seeing where those ideas take you.

You might be a multi-passionate creative if:

  • You can’t stand the idea of choosing one career path and sticking to it.

  • You’re an idea generator

  • You have a long list of things you want to try, learn, or do

  • You have multiple hobbies and interests

A multi-passionate creative has the passion + raw talent to bring many ideas to fruition. It comes from a strong desire to share multiple things with the world. I encourage you to allow yourself the freedom to pursue those passions.

Next, here are 5 tips to teach you how to implement these ideas wisely and in a way that they can help you fully express yourself, without the internal conflict that constantly generating new ideas creative can bring.

5 TIPS FOR THE MULTI-PASSIONATE ENTREPRENEUR

If you have a strong desire to share multiple things with the world this might have resonated with you. But now what do we do with those urges?

This can often feel like a burden, but in reality, it’s an incredible gift! I know you may have the burning desire to blend all of your passions into your business RIGHT NOW and if you can't the ideas persist to nag at you. You simply need to learn how to implement these ideas wisely. Just because you always want to start something new doesn't mean you are flakey or irresponsible.

Let’s explore some tools to bring all of these interests and passions to a place where you don’t feel conflicted by them:

1. Ask yourself, does it need to be shared with the world or is it more of a hobby?

ex: do you need to start selling pottery on Etsy or is it simply something that you want to learn and make for yourself.

2. Ask, what is it trying to tell you?

Is your desire a true desire or based on your current circumstances? Take note of when are the ideas coming to you. Did you have a really stressful week? What else is going on? Are you unhappy with your job or a relationship?

3. Can you implement this into something you’re already doing?

Do some brainstorming and find out.

4. Establish seasons of focus

Set your goals for the next 90 days and refuse to implement anything new beyond your specific goals for that time. During this time have a notebook where you can write down and keep track of all your new ideas. Take note of how you feel about the idea as time goes on.
Take a pause, give your ideas some time. As you wait it out watch for the best ideas to come to the surface.

5. Listen to your intuition

This often appears as a still small, consistent voice. Listening to your intuition takes practice. I once heard a great description by Marie Forleo. She said:

"Find a place where you can be completely alone. then ask yourself, regarding the idea or opportunity, Does saying yes to this make me feel expansive or contractive?” Your body will respond in a very physical way so I urge you to literally “trust your gut” on this!

So, what do you think? Are you a multi-passionate entrepreneur? Do you feel inspired to take control of your unbridled ideas and passions and start creating something to share with the world? Perhaps you’ve been holding onto hope for a particular idea and you’re ready to let it go as a business and call it a hobby.

If nothing else, my hope is that you pursue your passions in some capacity and explore the things that are life-giving, even if they fail.
